The Indomie Spelling Bee National Finals was held on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA Hall), Central Business District, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
It was Ude-Ibe Chigozirim, a 12-year old student of Cherryfield College, Jikwoyi, Abuja who scaled all hurdles to become the winner of the National Spelling Bee Season 5; winning an all-expense paid trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC, U.S.A. as a guest, a travel allowance of $500, a scholarship fund and a good supply of Indomie and Ribena products.
Chigozirim’s winning word, Coccyx, means a small triangular bone at the base of the spinal column. With her victory, she joins others in the Spelling Bee Nigeria “hall of fame”: 2017 winner, Tirenioluwa Adedipe spelt Abranchiate; 2016 winner, Ruth Ejims spelt Gagaku; Janiform was the winning word for Onyinye Ohuabunwa in 2015 while the winner of the maiden edition, Zainab Olawale spelt Marathon in 2014.
The first runner up, 13 year old Rozey Zeenat of Excellent Foundation College, Lagos and the 2nd runner up went home with cash prizes in addition to a supply of Indomie and Ribena products from the sponsors; trophies for their respective schools and cash prizes for their coaches.
The 2018 National Finals had representation from 13 states viz. – Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Plateau, Ekiti, Delta, FCT Abuja, Kaduna, Benue, Bayelsa, Oyo, Ogun, Osun and hosts – Lagos. All national finalists qualifying from the different states arrived for the four-day national camp in Lagos right from April 29th.
The spellers had a fun time in camp, interacting with each other, making friends from different states across the country, taking part in team games and learning new things/skills from the mentorship sessions. They also had a written Vocabulary Test, which is a Scripps National Spelling Bee requirement, before the May 2 oral spelling finals.
Among the National Finalists at the 2018 Spelling Bee Nigeria finals in Lagos were these two young spellers who represented Akwa Ibom:
