I-Spell Challenge is an annual spelling competition organized for children below the age of 14 in Nursery/Primary and Junior Secondary Schools in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
The vision behind this competition is to help children improve on their spelling, expand their vocabulary and develop correct oral and written English usage.
As the name (i-Spell) suggests, we hope to promote the “I can” believe system in young minds – reassure children of their ability to accomplish great things (like spelling difficult words).
I-Spell Challenge is modeled after the Scripps National Spelling Bee in London: the competition proceeds in rounds, and in each round each speller is given a word to spell, those who spell correctly move to the next spelling round while those who misspell automatically drop out of the competition. The last correct speller, becomes the winner.
From the 2016th Edition, winners of I-Spell Challenge have had the opportunity to compete with their peers from across Nigeria at the National Finals organized by Young Educators Foundation (YEF), in Lagos – Nigeria. For details of this, see Events.
Our mission is to encourage/promote the “I can” attitude in children by means of spelling competitions.
We are poised to be a platform that will not only help children improve on their spelling, but encourage them to develop tenacity in handling challenging situations.
